I DID IT !!
It's been one week since the walk ended and my body is finally starting to feel normal again. I can honestly say that this walk was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it was to see so many people dedicated to the breast cancer cause together in one place. For three short days (okay they really were very long days) I felt so normal being surrounded by so many women and men who had lost loved ones to breast cancer. It was comforting on one hand to feel like I wasn't alone, and sad on the other to see up close and personal the breadth of this devastating disease. There were so many survivors, and I have to be honest-this part was difficult. Part of me ached as they all paraded in at the end because my mother wasn't one of them, she didn't survive, and it doesn't seem quite fair. It seems so arbitrary, but truly it was amazing to see that so many have fought and won, it's promising to know that those are the numbers that are increasing. It made me want to fight harder, to do more, and to keep working until there is no more breast cancer--until there is no more cancer at all. Now, you may think I'm being a little to optimistic, maybe I've lost touch with reality but I believe that we are not far off, I believe we will find a cure. It won't be easy, the research is expensive, and that's why I am even more committed to continue--every year to raise money, to raise awareness! Thank you all so much for being a part of this with me. Thank you for supporting me, encouraging me, pushing me, and challenging me. I will post pictures from the walk very soon.
Love, Lisa **************************************** Dear Friends and Family, In 1996 I lost my mother to breast cancer, she was only 47 years old. Her name was Maggie and she was an amazing woman. This year, in her honor, I am going to do an amazing thing! In October I will be walking 60 miles in three days to help women with undetected breast cancer find out early enough to survive. I’m walking so that my children will never have to go through what I have. I am walking for my sister, my aunts, my cousins, my friends, my coworkers. I’m walking for all women and the men who love them. I’m walking to help support breast cancer awareness and research. I may even be walking for someone close to you. Here in the United States someone’s sister, mother, wife, aunt or very best friend is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. Every 13 minutes breast cancer claims another life. Here are some frightening statistics. * 1 out of 9 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer. * Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. * Breast Cancer is the leading cause of death among women age 40 to 55. * 1 million women in the U.S. have breast cancer and do not know it. * There is no known cause and no cure for breast cancer. With enough research, enough education, enough attention, enough money, we can change all that. As a tribute to my mother and as a reminder to every woman I know, I have decided to participate in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day in Atlanta October 4th-6th. If you are unfamiliar with this event, it is a 60-mile, three-day walk from Lake Lanier Georgia to the heart of Atlanta, which raises money for breast cancer awareness and research. This is no small goal. I will be training for the next 7 months and as a participant I have pledged to raise a minimum of $1,900 for this cause. I cannot reach this goal without your help. If you would like to sponsor me in this effort you can do so by filling out the attached form and returning it to me with a check or money order. You can also sponsor me by pledging online at www.breastcancer3day.org Just click on “make an online donation” and select event Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, Atlanta 2002. Make sure you enter my name and my participant number (2818). I would like to have my fundraising completed by June 30th so I can concentrate fully on my training. Keep in mind that all donations are tax deductible. No amount is too small. Thanks in advance for supporting me in this crusade.
